Happy New Year! Reflections on 2013 and looking ahead ...
Hello and Happy New Year to everybody,
It's been a long slog to get here, but at last, we start a fresh with new goals in sight. Luckily for me, I got an early Christmas present in the form of an acceptance letter from the Royal Academy of Music offering me a place on their postgraduate Musical Theatre program. I am extremely excited at the prospect of studying there, though I hold of in accepting their offer, while I finish my other auditions. There is a very small window in which I may have a choice to make.
Unfortunately, the big pressure now comes in funding my professional development. To study on this one year course, and live in London for a year, I need to find £24,000. I don't earn that in a year as a newly graduated musician working partly in private teaching and the other half in retail. So, the applications for funding begin and I begin increase my hours at work to help my efforts in saving for this. It will all be worth it in the end! If anybody knows of any pots of money I could apply to, I would be eternally grateful. A little help would go a long way in my career and this is the lift off I need to get it all going.
Without looking to far ahead, and missing a whole 9 months before this actually kicks off, I am keen improve my teaching, trying new ideas and inspiring children in whatever way triggers artistic and musical reactions. At present, I have 14 wonderful pupils, each different and talented. I would like to congratulate my two exam students who passed their grade 2 and 3 last term with flying colours!
Finally, I want to mention my three big projects in 2013, each successful in helping me achieve my goal. In January 2013, I decided I wanted to change my path from Classical Singing and Opera, to Musical Theatre. With little experience in this field of performance, I went for it anyway, auditioning successfully for How to Succeed in Business, Songs for a New World, and 25th Annual County Putnam Spelling Bee. These experiences have taught me so much in performance and politics, and have been invaluable! Thank you to each of these companies for giving me the opportunities that propelled me into standing here, in January 2014, with an offer to study and a gateway into the profession.
Have a great year. Work hard and you will get what you want.
